ATURDAY, August 15 saw the final of
Hagans Croft’s dressage league being
held. The final was open to everyone,
with a separate prize giving for those
competing on the day and for those
who qualified for league prizes. The league
was very kindly sponsored by Springmount
Farm Cluck & Collect, Ballygowan. The
Gilbert family started up a small farm shop at
the beginning of lockdown, supplying locally
sourced fresh fruit, vegetables, breads,
cupboard essentials and sweet treats to the
local community in Ballygowan. The local
community have been very supportive and
appreciative of this farm shop and everyone
hopes that the Gilbert family make this a
permanent feature on the farm! Competitors
were in for a real treat, especially those who
came first in the league, as Springmount farm
Cluck & Collect provided fabulous hampers,
which were to the value of £40 each.
The day started with the Intro class, with
a total of 17 competitors turning down the
centre line - competition was stiff! Joanne
Martin and ‘Arctic Robin’ have supported the
five-week dressage league throughout and
Hagans Croft was delighted to see the pair
saluting to their highest score yet! Joanne
set out that morning to achieve 70% and she
certainly did that to perfection and, the icing
on the cake was when she picked up first place
on the day and second place in the league for
all their efforts.
Second place on the day was Laura
McDermott and ‘Cognac’ with a score of
69.33%. This is a fantastic achievement for
this pair, as they are both coming back from
an injury last year and they are building upon
their confidence to go back out competing
again, this competition has given them a
much needed boost.
Picking up first place in the league was
one of the youngest competitors, Charlie
Watson and her beautifully turned out pony
‘Master Casper Boy’. This pair have been so
consistent throughout the five weeks and
have been a delight to watch. Competing
within an adult dominated class, it is fantastic
to see Charlie doing it for the kids and, with
a total of three wins throughout the league,
there was no doubt that Charlie and ‘Master
Casper Boy’ would be awarded first place in
the Intro league. The pair came home with
lots of treats, including a beautiful body
warmer from The Spoilt Horse company.
All eyes were on Kaiti McCann and ‘Ronaldo’
within the Newcomers class. The pair had
been placed first for four consecutive weeks,
therefore everyone was cheering Kaiti and
‘Ronaldo’ on to make it a clean sweep. Nerves
didn’t get the better of them and they saluted
to a fantastic score of 74.83% and first place
on the day and first within the overall League.
Later on in the evening, Kaiti posted on
her social media page the collection of red
rosettes over the past five weeks - what a
sight to behold! They deserved every single
success as the pair work so hard. They are
now looking forward to Hagans Croft’s sixweek jumping league!
Another competitor who has done
consistently well throughout the league is
Victoria McCandless and her 20 years young
gelding ‘Koolstyle’. The pair have had four
second placings out of the five weeks and
therefore this set them up in good stead to

Next on the schedule was the Prelim
class, one of the most popular classes of
the dressage league. Judge Orlaith O’Hagan
had some very hard decisions to make, but
certainly enjoyed watching the array of
beautifully ridden tests. Katie Adams and
‘Wheatfields Charlie’ was one of those tests
that wowed the judge and the pair saluted to a
score of 71.59% and first place on the day and
first within the overall Prelim league. Katie
and her family were delighted to be bringing
home a Springmount Farm Cluck & Collect
hamper for all their efforts. With a hamper
full of fresh fruit, vegetables, store cupboard
essentials and sweet treats, their weekend
was sorted!
On the day, Katie McKee and ‘Ballyheerin
Tango’ were awarded second place for their
score of 71.36%. After Laura Fekkes and
‘Finn’s’ best three scores were totted up
over the past five weeks, the pair finished on
a score of 27, which awarded them second
place in the league. This was the first league
Laura has competed in at this venue and she
thoroughly enjoyed her time over the past
five weeks. Hagans Croft hopes to welcome
then back again soon.
Katie Adams did it again in the Novice
class on ‘Wheatfields Charlie’ - with a score
of 68.08%, they secured first place on the day
and fourth in the league. Kathryn McCaughan
and her horse ‘Monsoon’ were competing on
the day and they working trotted their way
across the diagonal to a finishing score of
67.69% and second place.
League placings were very close within the
Novice class - Laura Wilson and ‘Bertie’s’ best
three scores totted up to 31 in total, which
gave them the edge and they took home the
red league rosette and a Springmount Farm
Cluck & Collect hamper! Second in the Novice
league went to Laura Fekkes and ‘Finn’, who
were delighted with the Holmestead Saddlery
bucket of treats, including a Le Mieux
Headcollar and lead rope.
On to the Elementary class, where a few new
faces decided to trot down the centre line to
the judge, Coreen Abernethy. Storming ahead
with 74.14% was Debbie Burns and ‘Bella’,
who also won first place in the Elementary
league. Second on the day was Mandy Blakely
and ‘Kizzy’, who saluted to a score of 71.72%,
taking home the blue rosette.
The day ended with a Medium test ridden
by Cheryl Lawther and her horse ‘Pixie’. It is
not often Hagans Croft runs a Medium test,
therefore it was a pleasure to watch and judge
Coreen was delighted to have the opportunity
to judge Cheryl. With 62.26%, Cheryl came
home with the red ribbon for competing on
