Anya does the double at Vesey Lodge
V
ESEY Lodge was the idyllic setting for
the latest Northern Region xture,
where superlatives were commonly
used to describe the attention to
detail attached to every aspect of
the event. A herd of cows, a bronze deer, a
giant tennis racket and concrete tennis balls,
a ‘knight’ in shining armour, an old fashioned
pump at the new water complex and a
skeleton, resident in the cofn fence, were
only some of the many artefacts decorating
the fences. At one point, the skeleton had a
companion in the form of June Burgess, who
unfortunately had a dismount at the ‘Cofn’
fence but, thankfully, June just had some
bruising to prove her antics on the day.
Noel Fitzpatrick had, painstakingly, spent
many weeks and days preparing for the
occasion and Adam Stevenson’s three
courses provided plenty of questions for the
200 competitors who had travelled from far
and near.
In fact, the event had a truly International
avour, as the Northern Region were
privileged to have Pradyumna Dhumal from
Pune, near Mumbai competing. He is currently
based with Becky and Declan Cullen with the
aim of getting qualied for the Asian Games
and Championships and he has his sights
rmly on Ballindennisk International in a few
weeks. Pradyumna nished 13th in a class of
34, having got a very pleasing dressage score,
which placed him sixth in the rst phase. He
had one very costly fence in show jumping
and went clear cross-country, which was a
very satisfying result.
There was plenty to celebrate in the Smith
household on Saturday evening, as the Gilford
brothers reected on their performance at
Vesey Lodge. They took the top three placings
in both the EI 110 classes, as well as a win in
one of the EI 100 classes.
Steven topped the leader board in the EI
110 Open class on board Virginia Maguire’s
eight-year-old ‘September Storm’ gelding,
‘Handsome Starr’, who led from the outset,
having been awarded a mark of 22.8 by
Dressage Judge, Angeline Nicholson. They
nished almost eight points clear of Diane
Harron-Eakin’s ‘Izzietop’, a seven-year-old
mare by ‘I’m Special de Muze’.
Trevor Smith took the honours in the EI 110
class with a rst time win for ‘Mike of Mourne’,
a six-year-old gelding by ‘Ringfort Cruise’, who
most impressed Lucinda Webb Graham out of
the 26 starters. Runner up was Ann Bowe’s
seven-year-old gelding, ‘Hi Mr Henry’ under
the guidance of Steven Smith.

FIRST OUTING: Rosey Herron won the EI 90
class at Vesey Lodge on her first Eventing
Ireland outing on ‘Solitaire Rusty Brown’.
(FW34-558AH)
Junior class was Tom Rowlatt-McCormick,
who enjoyed back to back victories on his
mother’s ‘Mon Ami Alme’. They enjoyed a 5.2
point margin over second placed Darragh
Hanlon, who was riding Elizabeth McMillan’s
skewbald gelding, ‘Marco’.
Felicity McConnell claimed the red rosette
and a trio of successive wins in the EI 110
Pony class on ‘Finding Nemo’, nishing over
12 points clear of Tori Jewiss and ‘Carraigoir
Blaze’.
Synonymous with success, Denis Currie
had a runaway victory in the EI 110 Amateur
class with his faithful competition partner,
‘Arodstown Aramis’. They had a comfortable
13 point margin over second placed Florence
Campbell and ‘Emperor G’ on their debut
outing for 2020.
A very large entry in the EI 100 meant a class
division. Best of the ‘A’ section, judged by
Will McAuley, was Hollie Woods on Eamonn
O’Flynn’s six-year-old gelding, ‘Caprio’. They
gained one place from the rst phase after
the early leader, Lucca Stubington, picked up
20 penalties cross-country on ‘Xenophons
Honour’. Hollie kept the two jumping phases
clean to give her a 3.5 point margin over
Cooley Farm’s Bethany Burton and ‘Cooley
Everglow’.
The ‘B’ section, judged by Martina McKinley,
saw top marks go to Trevor Smith and ‘Mr
Diceman’, a six-year-old gelding bred by John
McBride. The combination were one of only
eight from the 21 starters, who managed to
keep all the coloured poles standing. Runner
up and just fractionally behind was Gemma
Goodrich riding Carole Young’s seven-yearold mare, ‘Lisnamuck Ab Fab’, who added
nothing to their atwork mark.
Scores in the Moore households were evened
this week, with a reversal of last week’s top
two results. Jayne Moore stole a march this
week in a heavily subscribed EI 100 Amateur
class, by most impressing dressage judge,
Janet Hall, and, despite lowering one coloured
pole, still managed to stay 2.3 points adrift of
sister, Kathryn, on ‘Flush Hill Fendi’.
One of the rising stars in Eventing and new
to the membership this year is Anya Teuton,
who claimed the top spot in both EI 100P and
EI 100J classes. The 14-year-old Donaghadee
girl led across all three phases in the EI
100 Pony class, where she nished on her
dressage score with ‘Lisrua Star’, a 10-yearold Connemara pony, who was competing
under Eventing Ireland rules for just the
second time. Second place went to another

up his Tullylish EI 110 Junior win with another
at Vesey Lodge on ‘Mon Ami Alme’.

DOUBLE: Trevor Smith had a double at Vesey

very promising athlete, Anna McCaldin riding
Fran McCormick’s ‘Mon Ami Tonnerre’, who
also added nothing to their rst phase score.
Anya’s second victory was on her mother’s
piebald gelding, ‘Painted Cavalier’, who
placed third on their rst outing at Tullylish.
This week, despite an unlucky pole in show
jumping, they still managed to claim the red
rosette by nishing fractionally ahead of
Lucy Johnston on her mother’s ve-year-old
‘Unsatiable’ gelding, ‘Major Cross’, who also
occupied the runner up spot last week.
There were 34 starters in the EI 90 class,
judged by Coreen Abernethy, who reserved
her top mark for 14-year-old Castlwellan
girl, Rosey Heron, who was making her
maiden foray into eventing. They had a half
point margin over second placed Hannah
Thompson, riding her own seven-year-old
mare, ‘Sam Mar Riverland Imp’.
Kathryn Marshall, who had a two year break
from eventing, came back with a bang to take
the win in the EI 90 Amateur class on her
‘Nigrasine’ gelding, ‘Aristocrat’. They secured
top marks from Janet Hall, which gave them
a comfortable margin over second placed
Nicola Martin and ‘Mr Pitt’, who made their
eventing partnership debut two weeks ago at
Tullylish.
Meantime, 15 enthusiastic and excited pony
riders were waiting in the wings for their EI
90 Pony class to get underway. The majority
of these competitors were new recruits this
year.
Top of this group was Gemma Murphy
who, despite lowering a rail with ‘Sillogue
Sergia’ still maintained a 1.5 advantage over
second placed Anna McErlean riding Jenny
Rollins’s nine-year-old grey gelding, ‘Raford
Jack’. All of these riders did particularly
well and organisers look forward with great
anticipation to see their future successes.
Northern Region would like to express
sincere thanks to Ian and Alison Wilson for
the use of the fabulous venue of Vesey Lodge
and to Noel Fitzpatrick for all his hard work
before, during and after the event.
As always, a huge thank you to all the
volunteers, who are pivotal to the running of
these events. Strict Covid-19 protocols require
many additional helpers and these requests
for help are always met with eagerness and
diligence.
The next EI event will be held this coming
Saturday at Loughanmore, courtesy of
the Dennison family. Sadly, due to current
restrictions, spectators are not allowed.

Saturday.
Power scored 30.9 in the opening

The CCI3*-S saw Brian Morrison and
