HORSEWEEK
FARMWEEK
AUGUST 20 2020
Top class show jumpers attend
Balmoral Park Championships
B
ALMORAL
Park
Championships took
place on Saturday,
August
15
and
Sunday, August 16.
The sun shone on the opening
morning and competition
was stiff and exciting. The
main arena kicked off with
the qualifying rounds for
the age classes nals, which
were held on Sunday before
The Underwriting Exchange
1.40m National Grand Prix.
Ring 2 and Ring 3 were
no
less
exciting,
with
competitors relishing the
opportunity to jump on grass
in such fabulous arenas.
Ring 2 held the Ulster Region
Grand Prix Series 1.10m and
1.20m junior and senior
classes. Ring 3 was a hive
of activity, with the 90cm,
followed by the Ulster Region
Grand Prix Series 1m, before
the 1.30m rounded the day
off in style, with young rider
Tom Wachman ying home
over ve seconds faster than
fellow young rider David
O’Connor.
Sunday morning dawned
not so bright but early, with
the main arena hosting the
Ulster Region Grand Prix
Series 1.35m. The class was
highly exciting with less than
two seconds between the top
six, but Gerard O’Neill pipped
the rest and came out on top.
This was another class well
represented by young riders,
with them taking six of the
top 10 places.
The age class nals were
next, with Cora Sharkey
taking the ve-year-olds,
Cian O’Connor taking the sixyear-olds and John McEntee
coming out on top for the
seven-year-olds.
The main arena nished
with the HSI Premier Series
Grand Prix, where Kate
Derwin came out on top
with ‘AHG Whiterock Cruise
Down’, she also nished
fth with ‘Deep Pockets’
and rounded off a fabulous
weekend by being crowned
Leading Young Rider.

PICTURES: Anne Hughes
Lyttle and Myrtle Peake, both
of whom have been involved
with Summer Balmoral since
the early days.
Ring 2 was home to the 1.10m
and 1.20m championships,
with ring 3 hosting the 1m,
four-year-old championship
and the Amateurs.
It was denitely Sheikh
Samir Mirdad’s day, as he
came out on top in both
the 1m and 1.10m senior
championships. The fouryear-old class was kindly
judged by former Aga Khan
winner,
James
Kernan,
international rider Conor
Swail and SJI Chairman
Eamon Rice and saw Deane
Rogan’s ‘Lucy’s Cornet’ being
favoured. The Amateurs
nished ring 3 with their
usual brand of speedy rounds
and great entertainment and
Sarah Kinnear took top spot,
nishing up a great weekend
for her.
Due to covid restrictions,
the championship had to be
run behind closed doors,
SIX-YEAR-OLD: Cian O’Connor and ‘Claude Monet’ clear the
final fence to win the Six-year-old championship at Balmoral
Park. (FW34-562AH)
limiting the number of
people attending the show,
this however, did not take
away from the buzz and
excitement. The last minute
decision to add in a third
arena only improved the
atmosphere, whilst allowing
better social distancing.
Ray
Buchanan,
show
director,
expressed
his
thanks to the sponsors, many
of whom, have supported
the show year after year and
were especially important
in these uncertain times.
Mr Buchanan then went
on to say, the competitors
did a fantastic job, not
only by providing great
entertainment,
but
also
by respecting the Covid
restrictions.
The course designers, Rafael
Suarez, John Doyle and Nigel
Jess created challenging but
fair tracks and this, coupled
with the great grass arenas
at Balmoral Park, allowed for
a super standard of jumping
and an all round great show.
