Gransha Working Hunter a great success
F
OR the rst time ever,
Gransha
(Bangor)
ran a Working Hunter
Arena alongside the
Winter Woollies Show,
and it proved to be a great
success. The day started
promptly with the horse
classes, judged by Adrienne
Stuart, over a course built in
the new enlarged TopSpec
arena.
Simon
Jackson
adjusted the course as the
day progressed and riders
were very happy with the
outcome.
Emily McGowan had an
exceptional day, winning
all her classes on her two
beautiful Connemara ponies
and nished the morning
taking the Championship
rosette. A very happy Anna
Skelly received the Reserve
Championship
on
her
beautifully schooled ‘Willow’.
In the afternoon, Karen
Bleakley took over the
judging and carried out the
duties very fairly, helping the
tiny competitors and passing
on hints and tips to all who
asked her opinion. The day

ran very smoothly thanks to
the competent helpers, Jenny
Bell, Maddie Cubberley and
Elaine McCoo.
Hopefully the Gransha
Summer Gala on August 29
and 30 will run as smoothly.

Ballyclare 16-year-old
partners first track winner
B
ALLYCLARE teenager, Sam
Ewing registered his rst
winner on the track proper,
when scoring on ‘Ardhoomey’
at Cork on Saturday, August 8.
The 16-year-old is a graduate
of the pony racing circuit,
having partnered in excess of
100 winners, including the two
principals contests - the Dingle
Derby and the Golden Mile.
Ewing, who landed the sprint
handicap,
beating
stable
companion ‘My Laureate’ - the
pair trained by his boss, trainer
Ger Lyons said: “I am absolutely
delighted. I was in the middle
and he has a massive stride and
picked them up easily. I knew
‘My Laureate’ would go a good
gallop and tracked her. He gets
a bit excited in the stalls and is a
forward-going horse. He’s been in
the yard a long time and a great
servant for the stable. I want to
thank Ger Lyons for giving me
the opportunities and my rst
winner. Everything happens a lot
faster on the racecourse proper.”
‘Ardhoomey’ was winning for
the rst time in two years and
it was only Ewing’s 10th ride on
the course and he added: “I came
down to Ger (Lyons) at Christmas
time for a few weekends and learnt

a lot. When the virus hit, I went
home for a while, but returned
and took out my apprentice
licence.”
Ewing will not lack for advice,
being based with Lyons, who
made Colin Keane his stable
jockey at an early stage of his
career and his father Warren is
a former top amateur rider, who
shared the Northern Region
Riders title in 2000 and has now
turned trainer, producing several
top jumps horses, which he sells
on to numerous top trainers in
Britain and Ireland.
Ewing Senior said: “I thrilled and
delighted to see him get his rst
winner.”
While Trainer, Ger Lyons
added: “Sam is a great little kid,
who joined us this year and I
worked with his father in Micky
Hammond’s 30 years ago. He has
great and natural feedback, is a
good kid and, if he doesn’t get any
bigger or greedier like his father
he has a chance.”
