Six up for Armagh’s ‘Dreal Deal’
By Shaun O’Dea
‘
DREAL Deal’, despite drifting
from 5/1 to 22/1, sauntered
home at the line to win the
Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle
at Punchestown on Sunday,
January 17 for Armagh trainer,
Ronan McNally. The local horse had
run last for most of the race, being
20 lengths in arrears of the rest of
the eld at one stage, however, when
asked by jockey, Denis O’Regan,
easily found another gear and led at
the ight for another facile victory
in the £35,000 Grade 2 contest
previously won by stars such as
‘Min’, ‘Douvan’ and ‘Vautour’.
‘Dreal Deal’ was rated 84 when
rst winning over hurdles, but has
risen in excess of 4 stone to a rating

of 141, when completing six wins in
a row!
McNally said: “His preparation
wasn’t ideal and that’s maybe why
the horse drifted. We did fancy him,
but my horses weren’t 100% over
Christmas and had a week off. We
also had frost at home and missed
valuable work and I took him to the
beach on Sunday, but it was halffrozen, so he hasn’t really galloped.
He hasn’t been eating as well as
he can either and his coat hasn’t
been great. Denis also thought
he needed the run. He won’t be
going to the Dublin Racing Festival
in Leopardstown, as I resisted
entering him and will probably go
to Cheltenham now. I think he’s
entitled to go there now.
“If we have to go for a lesser race in
between, we will do that and if not,
it will be straight to the Cheltenham
Festival. He will probably go for the
Supreme Novice Hurdle, but will be
entered in the Ballymore Novice as
HSI announces Joe Reynolds
to remain as interim CEO
H
ORSE Sport Ireland (HSI),
the
Governing
Body
for Equestrian Sport in
Ireland, is delighted to announce
that Joe Reynolds is to remain
as interim CEO of Horse Sport
Ireland for the year ahead.
Joe Reynolds took up the role
of interim CEO of Horse Sport
Ireland in September 2020
and, along with overseeing
the day-to-day running of the
association since that date, he
was the driving force behind the
hugely successful Horse Sport
Ireland Show Jumping Masters,
which was broadcast live on RTE
television just before Christmas.
Speaking
after
the
announcement, Horse Sport
Ireland Chairperson Professor
Mary
Lambkin-Coyle,
said:
“The board of HSI feel that it is
important to have stability right
now to enable us to deal with
the very demanding conditions
our industry is facing as a result
of the combined challenges of
Covid, Brexit and the Olympics.
We are also in the middle of an
ambitious project to create a
National Training Centre for
the industry at Greenogue
Equestrian and it is essential
to keep the momentum going to
deliver this successfully.

“Joe Reynolds is doing an
exceptional job as interim
CEO in managing all of these
demands and we feel that we
are best served by keeping him
in this role through this year, at
least until after the Olympics.
Thankfully, he is willing to do so
and we believe that this is the
best course of action right now.
“We look forward to welcoming
a new, permanent CEO towards
the latter part of the year and
we will look to that appointee to
lead the industry forward and
to deliver the next stage of our
ambitious strategic plan.”
Joe Reynolds added: “I am
delighted to accept this offer
to remain with HSI as interim
CEO. I am not the long-term
solution for this role, but I have
enjoyed each day of my work
since I took over in September.
This is such a huge industry
with a wide variety of activities
and there is a lot of scope for
further improvements in terms
of developing the industry. I am
really excited about what we
can achieve over the coming
months.”
well. That was the dream, but he
had to go and do that today. He’s
done it now, so we can dream!”
The local handler added: “My
only regret is that my son Kain isn’t
here (too young to gain entry). We
know now we have a genuine Grade
1 horse. It’s unbelievable - we have
only run in two Graded races.
“I promised Denis (O’Regan) the
ride on ‘The Jam Man’ at the Dublin
Racing Festival (February 6 and
7) and he’ll ride the ‘Dreal Deal’ at
Cheltenham and he could still have
options on the at next season.”
McNally has now two very top class
horses - ‘Dreal Deal’ and ‘The Jam
Man’ - in his small team, while the
trainer will give the veteran 18-yearold ‘See Double You’ another couple
of runs to attempt winning with the
oldest horse in training - the horse
presently joint oldest in the past
32 years of racing and if he fails to
sparkle, will be retired.
Meanwhile at Fairyhouse on
Saturday, January 16, Larne trainer,
Stuart Crawford maintained his
current run of success when ‘La
Chanteuse’ (14s to 10/1) gave a very
game performance and led three
from home to score easily in the
rst division of the mares maiden
hurdle at the course under jockey,
JJ Slevin.
Crawford said: “We’ve always
thought plenty of her. On her
rst run back at Down Royal, Ben
(Crawford /brother) rode her and
he was disappointed with her. She
probably really needed it, as she
blew up half way around.
“She came here today and
obviously has come on a good bit
from it. JJ gave her a good ride and
it’s great to get it, they are hard to
win. We were disappointed not to
get a bit of black-type with her in
her bumpers. We didn’t sell her and
she’s owned by my mother - so there
is a bit of extra pressure on.”
New processes for moving
equines from GB to NI
THE Department of Agriculture,
Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA)
has advised owners of equines to
become familiar with new regulations
for transporting live animals from
Great Britain to Northern Ireland.
Following the end of the EU-UK
transition period on December 31, 2020,
under the requirements of the Northern
Ireland Protocol, and associated UK
legislation, Northern Ireland remains
within the EU Single Market and
regulatory zone for animal health, plant
health and for some aspects of public
health protection.
This requires documentary, identity
and physical checks to be carried
out on relevant goods as they enter
Northern Ireland from GB.
A DAERA Spokesperson said: “As of
January 1, there are new rules in place
for transporting equines from GB to NI
and we would advise owners to become
accustomed to the new procedures, so
as to avoid any potential delays when
travelling to NI.
“Equine movements between GB and
NI will require:
- an Export Health Certicate
completed by an Ofcial Veterinarian
in GB
- pre-notication and upload of
supporting documentation in advance
to NI Points of Entry at Larne or Belfast
Ports via TRACES NT
“To assist owners and businesses in
moving equines, the Department has
created a specic webpage containing
all relevant information and outlining
the process involved.”
Further information can be obtained
at

articles/ equine-end- transition-qas
There will be no changes in the way
horses and other equines are moved
directly from NI to GB from January 1,
2021. These movements will continue
as before.
One piece of additional documentation
that will be required for NI resident
horses entering GB is evidence of the
date of leaving NI. This is applicable
to registered equines entering GB for
racing / competition or cultural event
and returning home.
Evidence of the date of leaving the
EU/NI is required to avail of the Export
Health Certicate that allows re-entry
back into the EU/NI within 30 days after
temporary export without the need for
blood testing.
More information and support for
business and individuals about the
rules changing following EU Exit are
available on the DAERA website by

of any new information or guidance by
