Champion trainer looks to Down
Royal as ‘Kemboy’ features in
Ladbrokes Champion Chase entry
C
HAMPION
trainer
Willie Mullins might
well have a runner
in the Ladbrokes
Champion Chase for
the first time in eight years,
as ‘Kemboy’ features among
the entries for the season’s
opening Grade 1 event at
Down Royal on Saturday,
November 5.
While the race’s most
successful
trainer
Paul
Nicholls
is
doubly
represented and Gordon
Elliott holds the strongest of
hands numerically, perhaps
it is the 2021 Irish Gold Cup
winner, which is the most
intriguing of the 13 hopefuls.
A four-time Grade 1 hero,
the 10-year-old would be
Mullins’ first runner in the
race since the Ruby Walshridden ‘Boston Bob’ and Paul
Townend’s mount ‘On His
Own’ finished third and sixth
respectively, behind ‘Road To
Riches’ and Paul Carberry in
2014.
Five-time winner Nicholls
has entered both ‘Frodon’,
successful
last
year
under Bryony Frost, and
‘Bravemansgame’,
while
Elliott, who has four wins
in the race to his name,
has made seven entries,
headed by the 2021 runnerup ‘Galvin’, which made a
winning return to action in
the Grade 3 Irish Daily Star
- Best For Racing Coverage
Chase at Punchestown last
Wednesday, October 12.
Elliott’s team also features
this year’s Irish Gold Cup
winner ‘Conflated’, 2020 Irish
Gold Cup winner ‘Delta Work’
and ‘Fury Road’; with Noel
Meade, who also won the
race in 2018 and 2019 with
‘Road To Respect’, set to be
represented by ‘Beacon Edge’.
‘Envoi Allen’, which would be
stepping back up in trip, is a
possible runner for Henry de
Bromhead, successful with
‘Valseur Lido’ in 2016; while
‘Darrens Hope’, the winner of
five races for trainer Robert
Murphy, is also entered.
Emma Meehan, CEO of
Down Royal Racecourse,
said: “Everything points
to a terrific renewal of the
Ladbrokes Champion Chase
in three weeks’ time. Our
two-day Ladbrokes Festival
of Racing will mark the return
to action of so many stars of
the game and certainly the
entries for the first Grade 1
of the season point to a topnotch renewal. The team at
Down Royal are very much
looking forward to two
great days of racing and are
working hard to ensure best
in class, both on and off
course.”
Good attendance at East
Antrim point to point
By Shaun O’Dea
LOCAL trainers claimed four of the six contests at the East
Antrim point to point staged at the popular Loughanmore venue
last weekend, with a good attendance of bookmakers.
Leading Templepatrick owner Wilson Dennison, who supplies
the course, enjoyed a good day with a winner and several placed
horses. ‘Ballyburn’, trained by Colin McKeever and partnered by
Cormac Abernethy, landed the younger geldings race in excellent
fashion. The winner, only sixth four out in a compacted field of
runners, still had considerable ground to make up, but after the
final fence found another gear for an ultra impressive victory. The
winner, an £80,000 store purchase, will now return to the sales
arena and will be ensured of considerable interest from the top
trainers.
‘Ultimate Optimist’, a new addition to Derrylin trainer David
Christie’s team having been bought from Donnchadh Doyle and
with All Ireland Champion rider Barry O’Neill aboard on his first
venture for the new connections, claimed the featured winners
contest in good style. The horse was always prominent and had
the race in safe keeping some way from home - cantering behind
‘Gorthill’ prior to heading the latter and assuming command and
appears a promising addition to the Fermanagh based operation.
Christie said: “I’m delighted for Ray (Nicholas) and Sam (Dr
Campbell), as they have been long time supporters. I’ll look for
another winners race next. He’s a staying type of horse and I could
consider a maiden hunterchase down the line, but delighted to
have him.”
Draperstown trainer Noel Kelly supplied the winner of the older
mares maiden, when the well supported ‘My Girl Katie’, with Oran
McGill in the saddle, gamely held the strong challenge of runner
up ‘Drumlees Pet’.
Former dual Northern Champion rider Noel McParlan, who
partnered the last named, gained compensation when scoring on
‘Drumlee Lake’, trained by his father Sean, in the finale.
Sean Doyle trained the winner of the opening young mares race,
making all and surviving a bad blunder at the penultimate fence,
with Rob James keeping the partnership intact. ‘Mister Park’,
with James Hannon aboard, and despite a few jumping errors,
made an impressive winning debut in the five-year-old geldings
maiden, beating the Dennison-owned duo ‘Ballydesmond’ and
‘Ballyrashane’ and the former looks a certain winner in the coming
weeks. The winner is another set for the sales ring.
