Endurance season for 2022
kicks off for ILDRA
I
LDRA (Irish Long Distance Riding
Association) kicked off their 2022
endurance season with a New Year’s
Day ride at Shane’s Castle on January 2.
Eager riders and horses were out in force
to bring in the New Year, with a ride around
the beautiful estate of Shane’s Castle and into
the neighbouring Randalstown Forest Park.
Thanks go to the Shane’s Castle Estate staff
and the O’Neill family for access and to the
forestry service for access to Randalstown
Forest. Thanks also go to the McFarland
family for marking the route and to Charlotte
Moore, John Anderson and Kirsten Conly for
organising and assisting on the day. Check out
ILDRA’s website or Facebook page for details
on upcoming rides, please note that all rides
must be pre-entered online.
3 for 2 Offer on Vetted Pleasure Rides
Would you like to...
- canter along the beach at St. Patrick’s Coast
Ride?
- ride a finish up the hill at Downpatrick
racecourse?
- trot past acres of wild bluebells at Shane’s
Castle?
You can do all this and more with ILDRA.
Riders enjoy access to many private estates,
forestry and other land not normally open to
the public and rides are open to both members
and non-members (although entries are prebooked, online only). This year, to welcome
back returning members and encourage
new ones, organisers want to help riders get
themselves and their horses back in shape because neither rider nor horse will be having
a good time if they are not fit enough. To that
end, organisers are offering a ‘3 for 2 offer’ on
Vetted Pleasure Rides between February and
August (inclusive).

Castle. (FW07-533NN)
THE inaugural running of the Schools
Winter Warm Up series took place on
Sunday, February 6 at the Meadows
Equestrian Centre, Lurgan. In windy
and cold conditions, a good entry
competed in the dressage and show
jumping arenas.
Under the eye of the dressage judge,
over 40 tests were ridden by riders as
young as six years of age! Whereas
in the show jumping arena over 120
entries were received throughout
the day, with the youngest rider, at
just four years old, taking part in the
cross-poles class.
RESULTS - Sunday, February 6

BRACING: Get yourself ready for a bracing
gallop along the beaches of St Patrick’s Coast!
(FW07-531NN)
Have you ever wondered if your horse would
be fit enough to compete in a Competitive
Trail Ride (CTR), but have worried about the
vetting process? If so, taking part in a Vetted
Pleasure Ride is the perfect opportunity to
find out! You get to enjoy a short ride without
the time and speed constraints of a CTR, but
with the bonus of getting a chance to try the
vetting procedure.
Every year, ILDRA gets many riders who
would love to canter along those beaches at
the St. Patrick’s Coast Ride, but feel (probably
accurately) that their horses are not fit enough
for the full 20-mile loop - if you are one of those
riders, this is your chance to change that. You
will be able to see the improvement in your
horse’s fitness levels through monitoring
heart rates and recovery times at successive
vettings and gradually increasing the
distances you can cover comfortably, with
each ride you do.
ILDRA hopes to offer Vetted Pleasure Rides
at most of their events between now and the
end of August (excluding the Castle Ward and
Clandeboye rides). To take advantage of the 3
for 2 offer all you need to do is enter and pay
for two Vetted Pleasure Rides - you do not need
to be an ILDRA member nor does your horse
need to be registered with ILDRA. Before you
enter your third Vetted Pleasure Ride, you
need to claim your free Vetted Pleasure Ride
by emailing: info@enduranceridingireland.
com (or use the contact form on the website).
Organisers will allocate a credit to your
account, so when you enter you will not be
charged.
Check out ILDRA’s website for further details
on this offer and some helpful tips on the
vetting process, but never worry if you have
any questions on the day of the ride - there are
Returning for 2022 - ILDRA’s Vetted
Pleasure Ride and CTR League
Are you a pleasure rider or CTR rider, who
would fancy a chance to win some fabulous
rosettes for taking part in either vetted
pleasure rides or CTRs? If so, ILDRA’s 2022
League is the event for you!
Why not make the most of ILDRA’s 3 for 2
offer on vetted pleasure rides and combine
with the league, with categories for vetted
pleasure rides, bronze CTR rides, silver CTR
rides and gold CTR rides - there is something
for everyone in this league. To join ILDRA’s
2022 League, you do not need to be a member
nor does your horse need to be registered,
simply pay a one-off £10 league fee and take
part in either vetted pleasure rides or CTR
rides (note: CTR riders must be members of
ILDRA).
With points allocated based on attending the
ride, your horse’s heart rate and the mileage
covered during your ride, there are ample
opportunities to build up your score! Your
overall score will also be calculated based on
your best three rides of the league season.
This league will run on all vetted rides from
now until the end of August, with rosettes
being presented to the horse and rider
combinations placing first to third in each
category - why not challenge yourself to try
something new? This league is also the perfect
training opportunity for any riders interested
in taking part in a vetted pleasure ride at the
fabulous St. Patrick’s Coast Ride!
To sign-up, head to ILDRA’s website for
further details on how to join in!
