ELL done to everyone who took
part in Blossomhill Stables’
six-week showjumping league,
hopefully you all enjoyed it as much as
the organisers did.
Big thanks to Doagh Equestrian and

kind sponsorships and John Gibson

It was lovely to see the effort that
everyone put in to their fancy dress

Great turnout for Co Down
hunt despite damp conditions
BY SHAUN O’DEA
D
ESPITE the weather conditions, the
County Down Hunt meeting attracted
a god turnout plus a hardy contingent
of ten bookmakers, who turned up to
their cost with numerous very well
supported horses winning on the day.
Eleven times All Ireland Champion rider
Derek O’Connor made a now rare visit to
the Northern circuit to successfully partner
January Jets in the featured open contest at
the Loughbrickland point to point for trainer
Graham McKeever.
The winner under a typical patient ride from
the champion, improved over the second four,
but was quickly challenged by the runner-up
Welsh Saint. However O’Connor was always
confident and asserted before the last.
The former was a high-class performer for
trainer Henry De Bromhead and has a top
end target. McKeever said “He’ll be aimed at
the Aintree Foxhunters. I’m delighted to have
him and was delighted for connections he won
first time out.” The rider and trainer are no
strangers to Aintree success having won the
2018 Foxhunters with Balnaslow.
Templepatrick owner Wilson Dennison
continued a successful autumn campaign
when Forcing Bull, trained by Colin McKeever
with Cormac Abernethy aboard, made all for
a convincing victory in the geldings maiden,
improving on his seasonal effort when third at
Toome and is destined for the sales.
Ask Anything provided rider Darragh Higgins
with his second winner in the opener and

another bound for the sales, while the finale
resulted in a family success with Grain De Folie
proving the runaway winner, scoring by forty
lengths for brother and trainer Martin Fox and
partnered by Anthony Fox.
The Donnchadh Doyle trained Hello Marie
landed the mares maiden with Rob James in
the saddle with only three starters and two
completing the course.
Current All-Ireland Champion rider Barry
O’Neill yet again recorded success locally
when claiming the winners event on the David
Christie trained Ferns Lock.

UE to the very wet weather and resulting
ground conditions at the end of last
week, the Show Jumping league final
due to be held at The Burn, Knockbracken
Healthcare Park, near Carryduff on Sunday,
October 30, has been re-scheduled for this
coming Sunday, November 6.
Jumping will commence at 1pm with a
50/60cm class, followed by 70/80cm and
90cm/1m. The mixed heights in each class
offer a great opportunity for anyone who
is hoping to move up a class, but perhaps
doesn’t feel quite ready to do so.
Organisers are planning to have a wee party
after the jumping to conclude the league.
More details are available on The Burn
Equestrian Centre Facebook page.
