BALMORAL SHOW
Shearing challenge at the
Zoetis/RUAS national final
T
HE Zoetis/RUAS
National Sheep Shearing
Championships at
Balmoral Show will
certainly provide a
serious challenge this year.
Contestants will be aiming to
beat the average time of one
minute 12 seconds to shear
a sheep at last year’s event.
Jack Robinson won for the
fifth consecutive year in 2018,
however it’s all to play for in
2019.
Jane Harkness-Bone, from
the RUAS Shearing Committee,
points out that there is the
added incentive this year –
the top three shearers will
have the opportunity to
represent Northern Ireland
at the Six Nations Shearing
Championships at the Royal
Welsh Show in August.
The Zoetis/RUAS competition
takes place on Thursday,
May 16, heats start at 9.30am
and progress to the final at
4.45pm. The very modern
and spacious sheep shearing
facilities provided at the
Balmoral Show site have been

packed to capacity in the past
two years for the Zoetis/ RUAS
National Shearing final. This
year is expected to be another
bumper event generating great
enthusiasm from the crowd and
a really tough competition for
the finalists.
The competition attracts
previous winners and shearers
returning from a season in New
Zealand and other countries
around the world.
Paul Redmond from global
animal health company Zoetis
is delighted that the company
is again sponsoring such a
high-profile event. Mr Redmond
is looking forward to the
competition which has become
so popular that it is a case of
“standing room only” at the
final.
Mr Redmond pointed out
that it is great for a company
which promotes sheep health
to be associated with the skills
and enthusiasm of this event.
He stated: “Cydectin 20mg/ml
(2%) LA solution for injection
for sheep has been proven to
treat scab infestations and to
prevent re-infestation for 60
days from a single injection. It
has a persistent effect against
worms meaning that it doesn’t
only control worms present
at the time of treatment, but
continues to kill incoming
larvae for up to 111 days.”
