A Spooktacular Sunday at Lusks
H
ALLOWE’EN is a special
time of the year at Lusks,
especially for the children, so
Jenny made a special effort
with an array of flowers, pumpkins,
ghosts and witches for their
Spooktacular Derby on Sunday,
October 30.
Proceedings started prompt at
10 am with the metre class which
produced a thrilling jump off with
eight riders vying for the top spot.
The lead changed with almost
every competitor and eventually it
was won by Heather Steele with her
own horse Poppy, second last to go,
who sealed the win in a blistering
time of 37.49, excitedly called home
by judge Denise Whithers.
The 85cm class, always the largest
class of the day, only produced six
riders going through to the jump off
and it was Lesley Coey, second to
go, who went round clear in 37.13 to
claim the win.
The third class of the day was
a new motivation for Lusks who
called it an adult amateur Derby.
It was planned for those who are
perhaps a little nervous and always
slower than the adventurous
children, who seem to have no fear
whatsoever, so they never seem
to appear in the prize line-up. Five
riders went clear and it was left to
Downpatrick man Russell McNabb,
last to go, who claimed the red
rosette.
n Heather Steele guided Poppy to victory in the 1m class. (FW44-577NN)
n Russel MacNabb won the 75-80cm class on Rico. (FW44-582NN)
n Stephanie Wilding on Pearl was placed second in the 85cm class. (FW44581NN)
The 70cm class was again very
well supported with many children
competing, all good friends but
when it came to the 11 clears going
against the clock and the chance of
success meant caution was thrown
to the wind and friendships put
aside while the young riders went
for glory. It was Alice Gilmour on
Harvey Moon who won, clear with a
time of 39.95.
n Thanks to all our helpers
who make Lusks competitions so
successful and great fun.
n There is now four weeks of
Dressage followed by the final event
of the year, the Christmas Derby on
December 11.
