Victory for Derwin in HSI
Premier Series at Balmoral
I
RISH Sport Horses and Ireland’s
up-and-coming Young Riders
dominated Sunday’s penultimate
round of the Horse Sport Ireland
(HSI) Premier Series at Balmoral
Park in Lisburn, where Athlone’s
Kate Derwin and the Francis Derwinowned Irish Sport Horse ‘AHG
Whiterock Cruise Down’ scored a
superb victory.
Kate Derwin was crowned
European Champion at U18 level
in 2019 and has shown she is more
than capable of making her mark at
senior level ever since. Her victory at
Balmoral came after a brilliant jumpoff display, which saw her cross the
line clear in 39.84 seconds. Second
place went to another Young Rider
as Mikey Pender and the Irish Sport
Horse ‘HHS Calais’ (ISH) jumped
clear in 41.32, while Army rider Capt
Geoff Curran nished third with the
Irish Sport Horse, ‘Glengarra Wood’
(42.39).
Jenny Rankin and ‘Entertainer’
nished fourth, while Kate Derwin
also lled fth place with another
double clear aboard ‘Deep Pockets’.
Tim MacDonagh completed the top
six with ‘Hollypark Galloway’.
The nal round of the Horse Sport
Ireland Premier Series takes place
at Portmore in Co. Armagh on
September 6, with Kilkenny’s Ger
O’Neill still out in front as league
leader with ‘MHS High Hopes’.
The Balmoral Park Championship
took place on Saturday and Sunday
and proved popular across the
board, with all classes being well
supported by show jumpers from
all over Ireland. The standards
of jumping were high and the
atmosphere was fantastic, despite
spectators not being able to attend
due to Covid restrictions.
Organisers had clearly gone to
great lengths to ensure the safety of
those who were in attendance, being
diligent in checking track and trace
information, providing plenty of hand
sanitiser and reminding everyone
about social distancing.
Those in attendance respected
the rules, which made for a safe and
pleasant experience for all.
