Dairy industry to meet at the
Royal Ulster Winter Fair 2017

and Jersey cows, the
picturesque Clandeboye
Estate near Bangor was
a fitting setting for the launch of
one of the most highly anticipated
agricultural events of the year — the
Royal Ulster Agricultural Society’s
(RUAS) annual Winter Fair.
Due to return to the Eikon
Exhibition Centre at Balmoral
Park on Thursday, December
14, the 32nd Royal Ulster Winter
Fair, in association with longstanding sponsor Danske Bank,
preparations are well underway for
the prestigious dairy event.
As the premier annual dairy event
in Northern Ireland, it provides an
opportunity for farmers, enthusiasts
and industry specialists to meet
and network. Competition will
again be fierce as quality livestock
from across Northern Ireland and
the Republic of Ireland compete
for the coveted title of Supreme
Champion.
Danske Bank is once
again the sole sponsors
of the event, as it has
been since its inception
in 1986.
Robert McCullough,
Head of Agribusiness at
Danske Bank, said: ‘‘Our
close links to the dairy
industry and Northern
Ireland’s wider agri-food industry are important to us

investment in the Winter Fair

Proud message at this year’s
London Lord Mayor’s Show
THE message
from the British
farming industry
will be loud and
clear during this
year’s Lord Mayor’s
Show in the City
of London: ‘We’re
proud to produce
your food.’
Agriculture will
take centre stage in
the 802nd parade on
Saturday, November
11, thanks to
the Worshipful
Company of
Farmers, with its
own independent
entry in the
show for the first
time, supported
by the NFU and
agricultural
machinery
manufacturer New
Holland.
The organisations
will be highlighting
the economic and
environmental
importance of
farming, as well as
its crucial role in
helping to deliver
food security for
Britain.
This year’s entry
led by Julian
Sayers, the newly
installed Master
of the Worshipful
Company of
Farmers, will
feature a New
Holland T7.270
tractor, one of the
most advanced and
powerful tractors,
and a CR8.80
combine harvester,
equipped with a
20-foot header,
showing full
support for the
Back British
Farming message.
The procession
will also include
eight young farmers,
each representing
the NFU’s regions.
They were
chosen after the
NFU launched
a nationwide
search to find
young farmers
who have made
an outstanding
contribution to the
agricultural sector.
Support for ploughing fundraiser
A crowd of around 400 attended
the fundraising barbeque
and auction held in Jackson’s
Farmyard, Ballynure.
The event was in aid of
Allen McAnally, Ballyboley
(Conventional) and Adrian

focused on the dairy sector, and
the very best dairy cattle from
Northern Ireland and further afield,
the Winter Fair really is a
‘must attend’ event for
the sector.
“We believe the
balance of challenges and opportunities facing our
sector has now
shifted back in
favour of the opportunities and we
look forward to
discussing this more optimistic outlook with farmers and
industry representatives at this
year’s fair.”
Visitors to the Winter Fair can
expect to observe the highest
quality of livestock competing from
across the country and this year the
RUAS is delighted to welcome Hank
Van Exel, who is travelling from
California, USA, to judge.
The event also provides the
perfect opportunity to meet with
and hear from over 200 dairy
related trade exhibitors who will be
in attendance.
New to the 2017 Winter Fair is
the hoof trimming demonstration,
which will take place on the day.
Millfarm Hoofcare will share its
knowledge with a presentation and
practical display on the causes,
treatment and prevention of
lameness in cows – this is sure to be
an interesting addition.

year, the Winter Fair has continued
to grow. Now in its 32nd year, it sits
firmly within the agri-calendar as
Northern Ireland’s premier annual
dairy event.

hear about up to date technological
advances, difficulties and solutions
within the industry.
