HOYNE PLACEBOOK®
Mak-Schindler Residency,
Los Angeles
GOAL: To provide quality temporary accommodation
for visiting creatives to live and work for free in LA.
APPROACH: Artists can slip into a California state of mind
while living in the Rudolph Schindler-designed Mackey
Apartments in LA. Every year, the MAK-Schindler residency
(The MAK Center for Art and Architecture) invites two artists
and two architects to explore the intersection of culture and
the built environment of Los Angeles. MAK steps in with a
healthy monthly stipend and LA connections to realise resident
projects, which are made public through a final exhibition.
Lampwork Lofts, California
GOAL: To re-use a former lamp factory building in Oakland
in a modern context, within an up-and-coming post-industrial
residential neighbourhood.
APPROACH: A hallmark example for the re-use of
abandoned, urban industrial buildings, the reuse of industrial
materials already available within the structure was a central
tenet to the design. This utilitarian approach provided the
concurrent advantages of conserving resources and staying
true to its post-industrial urban setting. Many original details
remain, recast as unique decorations. Concrete floors and
cinder-block walls interlaced with benign remnants of heavy
equipment demonstrate the potential for quality residential
use in buildings such as this.
