Capitalising
on culture
CHINA
In China, cultural and creative industries
are being used as a significant driver
of growth for economic and urban
development. Seeing opportunities in
old factories for their large space and low
rental costs, investors have turned many
industrial relics into parks, museums,
art galleries, start-up incubators, and
“art districts” to generate value for new
and existing residential communities.
Old factories, mills and warehouses are
being reborn as homes to bookstores,
hotels, and offices, even Winter Olympic
(skiing) venues.

EUROPEAN UNION
In the European Union, there are more
than 300 creative hubs specifically
supporting the creative and cultural
industries. They are coordinated by the
European Creative Hubs Network with
the aim of enhancing the creative,
economic and social footprint of all hubs
and fostering collaboration to promote
innovation and creativity. When aligned
with residential communities, artists
and creatives within the hubs have a safe
space to grow, become empowered and
connect with the wider ecosystem.
