THE TAUBMAN
TIMES
CURRENT OWNERSHIP & ESTABLISHMENT
OF THE PAINT FACTORY
Development of this area
was sparse until, in 1952,
a large parcel of land
was deemed perfect for
the Taubman’s paint
factory which set up
shop in Hyde Road.
When Hyde Road was sold in 2015 to the current owners, an
advisory team scoped a range of viable options for the future
of the underutilised site. While planning and assessments were
taking place, the owner, an active patron of the arts, invited
established and emerging artists to use the space as a temporary
home to create.
2000s:
RIVERSIDE
DEMAND
By the early 2000s
Yeronga was recognised as a riverside real estate ‘hot spot’,
not entirely surprising considering half of its borders faced
water. The once derelict northern edge along Brisbane
Corso was much admired as were addresses on Esplanade,
Astolat St, Instow Street and Rome Street South. A new
drive-in shopping centre, Yeronga Village, opened in 2002,
immediately north of Devon Street, at Fairfield Road.
The location became known by artists and locals as The Paint
Factory and, over recent years, renowned artists from across
Brisbane and the globe have gathered there to create and meet
with like-minded creatives. Some of the artists working from
informal studios at The Paint Factory have created artwork
which has been exhibited and sold nationally and internationally.
Their artwork features in the collections of some of the world’s
most prestigious galleries, including the Tate Modern (UK), the
Art Institute of Chicago (US), The National Gallery of Canada
and The National Gallery of Australia.
