LOVE
What is your current role within the agricultural
industry?
Majority partner of a family run dairy and manger of
an on site vending machine where we vend our own
pasteurised milk.
Majority Partner, Bridge of Aird Farm,
Stranraer
People may also recognise us from BBC This Farming
Life. We weren't even at the point of trading on the
programme but obviously people have been
following our progress and now coming in their
hundreds everyday.
As a woman in agriculture, have you come across
any challenges or obstacles?
I personally haven’t faced any challenges that I recall.
I feel modern day farming accepts women as much
as men in the most part. If you can prove you can do
the job as well as or better than a man in the same
role then why should you be treated differently.
What changes, if any, would you like to see within
the industry to ensure the success of women in
agriculture?
Older attitudes I feel are already changing and
women in most cases are accepted in their roles in
agriculture.
Knowing what you do now, and the experience you
have, what advice would you go back and give your
younger self before embarking on a career in
agriculture?
Personally I would tell myself what I already knew…
it’s going to be hard, there will be sacrifices made as
it’s a 7 day a week job, you need to put the hours in
but if you do all that the reward will be there.
What do you believe is the measure of a successful
woman in agriculture?
The measure of success of a woman in agriculture is
the same as a man. Being accepted as a successful
farmer, regardless of gender. What makes a
successful farmer will differ from person to person
and farm to farm but as with any role enjoyment
should always come out on top - even on the ‘bad
days’

And finally, what is your favourite thing about
working within the agricultural industry?
My favourite thing about working within ag industry
is the satisfaction and pride you get from a rewarding
job. Working outside in a healthy environment with
animals. No one day is the same as jobs change when
the seasons do and unexpecting things happen daily.
It’s also nice when plans come to fruition.
