Adam Barrett grew up in Bay St. Louis, Miss., as an LSU fan and followed
in his grandfather’s footsteps to attend the university. His student teaching
position was at ULS, where he “fell in love” with middle school science. He
has been a teacher for 16 years and joined the ULS faculty 10 years ago.

How would you describe the sixth grade integrated
science experience for students?
One thing that you have to be able to do if you teach
middle school is be yourself and have fun. I think
science lends itself to having fun because there
is so much you can do that allows kids to interact
and be hands-on. I can honestly say that I laugh
and smile with the kids every day. I hope that they
can say the same! I really love teaching the force
and motion unit, when the students make cars and
we race them. The activity really brings out the best in
their creativity and competitive nature.
What stands out
as your favorite
school memory?
My favorite
school memory
was attending
my first U-High
pep rally and
walking in and
seeing the
school spirit,
traditions, and
excitement. I
was blown away.
I remember not
knowing the alma
mater but
trying to sing
along anyway.
What is it like having
your kids at the school?
Some people may think that spending all
of your time with your kids might be crazy,
but I love getting to see my kids (Benjamin, ’31; Brooke, ’33) every day
and getting to be involved with their everyday activities. The Lab School
provides such great opportunities for teachers who have kids at the school
to be involved and have a deeper relationship with your kids’ teachers and
friends. I know as they get older, they may not want me to be around as
much, but right now they are the perfect age that they think it’s cool to have

What is most
rewarding to you as a
teacher?
The most rewarding
thing to me as a
teacher is when I
have former students
come back and see
me when they are
upperclassmen or
even in college and
talk about what they
remember from my
class. It reminds
me that it’s not
always about
what you teach
them – it’s about how
you teach them and
treat them.

Tell us some fun facts
about you.
I have been married
for 17 years! My favorite thing to
do outside of school is fish, and I collect
coins and currency. I have been to Disney
over 40 times. I played on a football team
with Vince Young, a former Heisman Trophy
winner, and he threw me three touchdown
passes in one game. I enjoy DIY projects
and am pretty handy!
