arbara Benton grew up in
Baton Rouge but first set foot
on the ULS campus while in
graduate school at LSU. She
remembered, “When I was working
on my master’s and had to supervise
some college students at the Lab
School, I walked in that building and
it was the first time I’d ever been in
it. I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, this is
where I want my kids to go to school
and where I want to work.’”
That newly seeded dream did come
to fruition, with Barbara’s career
taking her to ULS to teach fourth
grade in 1991 and sons Beau (’99)
and Clay (’02) graduating as 13-year
seniors. Their paternal grandmother,
Evelyn Tiebout Benton, graduated
from ULS in the early 1930s and lived
on LSU’s campus. Nearly 100 years
later, grandson Dr. Clay Benton now
works just a few blocks down from his
K-12 alma mater as LSU’s university
registrar.
