Reflections: Successes
A description of successes and/or progress based on a review of the California School Dashboard (Dashboard) and local data.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING:
In the 2021-2022 school year, local metrics were used to determine the successes of Goal #1 (ensuring conditions for students to succeed)
and Goal #2 (engaging students with rigorous based curriculum and instruction). Local metrics in English Language Arts indicate student
growth in performance towards proficiency, moving from 54.7% proficiency in May 2021 to 58.4% proficiency in April 2022. The greatest
growth for English language arts was seen at the elementary level, with 65.73% of K-6th grade students scoring proficient on STAR Reading
Assessments. Specific highlights of these successes are centered on the following actions: professional learning initiatives focused on
culturally inclusive classroom environments that support literacy instruction, academic intervention programs, and district staff working closely
with classroom teachers on the implementation of supplemental materials to close the academic gap.
Ensuring a culturally inclusive classroom was the focus of professional learning for the 21-22 school year. This was accomplished by
partnering with Facing History, an organization committed to training teachers on culturally responsive classroom practices. The response
from teachers was overwhelmingly positive, with the average rating on a scale of 1 to 5 at a “4”, indicating a high level of application of
content to the classroom.
For Mathematics, an initial overview of the local metrics data shows a decrease in overall growth in comparison with prior years. Specifically,
64.75% of students scored proficient in May 2021 as compared to 61.55% in April 2022. However, a closer look at the growth within the
same school year shows tremendous growth from Fall of 2021 to Spring of 2022. For example, 38.4% of secondary math students in grades
7-12 scored proficient in September 2021, but by February 2022, the same student group was scoring at 52.7% proficient. Similar results
were seen in elementary grades 1st-6th. In the Fall Benchmark Math assessments, 61% of students scored proficient in February of 2022,
and 71% of students scored proficient. This growth can be attributed to professional learning for elementary teachers in the area of Math, and
the ongoing use of data analysis of common summative assessments to drive instruction. ABC Unified partnered with WestEd consulting
group to provide direct and specific coaching support to five schools with the highest need for unduplicated student groups: Furgeson,
Juarez, Hawaiian Melbourne, Palms, and Willow Elementary. Secondary schools engaged in a triangulated data analysis process in
Mathematics that utilized on-demand data from the newly implemented online math program known as ALEKS as well as student work
samples. This quarterly data analysis, guided by district coaches, helped to support the instructional needs of our unduplicated students and
allowed schools to offer appropriate intervention programs based on this data.
