Goals and Actions
Goal
Goal #
2
Description
Engage students who are English learners, foster youth, experiencing homelessness and from low-income backgrounds in
a culturally responsive learning environment in which teachers have the knowledge and skills needed to implement a
rigorous standards-based curriculum that enables students to meet or exceed standards in English language arts,
mathematics, and science. (Priority 2 and 4)
An explanation of why the LEA has developed this goal.
In order for students to graduate in four-year, students need to demonstrate proficiency in the core subject areas. Students’ State
assessment data indicate areas in which students have not demonstrated standards mastery. Consequently, these gaps create barriers that
limit student access to higher course offerings and/or may hinder students from graduating from high school in four years as indicated by the
graduation rate. Students who have not consistently experienced academic success may lose confidence in their academic abilities.
Students’ perception of their self worth can be affirmed through a culturally relevant curriculum that promotes understanding, valuing and
respecting diversity. Teachers can create a learning environment that affirms the cultural assets of students in a safe and enriched learning
environment. Students need equitable access to highly qualified teachers who rely on the analysis of data to differentiate instruction and to
provide students the additional support and opportunities they need to meet and/or exceed the standards as indicated by their academic
performance on the SBAC ELA and math and CAST assessments.
