Goals and Actions
Goal
Goal #
4
Description
Ensure that all students graduate high school in four years and have equitable access to a broad course offering and
enriched learning opportunities that promotes college and career readiness and technology advancement for successful
engagement in citizenship in a global society. (Priority 5, 7 and 8)
An explanation of why the LEA has developed this goal.
Students who are English learners, foster youth, experiencing homelessness and from low-income backgrounds, often have limited access to
the resources needed to successfully prepare them for college and/or career opportunities. In order to close the opportunity gap, students
require access to additional resources that will enable them to attain the skills and achievement levels needed to graduate high school
prepared for post-secondary options as indicated by the College and Career Indicator. Students’ aspirations vary and reveal the need for a
rigorous course plan that connects student learning to real-life experiences and deepens their understanding of content knowledge. The fouryear cohort dropout rate for 2019-20 was 1.4%, reflective of a cumulative 0.5% decrease over a two-year period. Contributing to the declining
high school dropout rate is the variety of ways in which students access a broad course offering. Students faced with challenging home
conditions and credit deficiency may choose to access their academic program in a smaller learning community in which students have daily
access to direct services and a modified curriculum that keeps them engaged and prevents them from dropping out of school. Robust
summer school programs, credit recovery coursework and accelerated courses is also an avenue by which students can meet the graduation
requirements and be prepared for post-secondary advanced courses. Success in college or career also requires students to be technology
efficient and proficient. Technology serves as a vehicle for students to gain access to individualized learning platforms and for developing an
understanding of the appropriate tool to best represent and communicate their knowledge in a meaningful way.
