Sustainability in the Paint and Coatings Industry
World Coatings Council
Materiality Assessment
In 1992, the International Paint and Printing
Ink Council (IPPIC) was established to ensure
coordination on issues of import to the global
coatings industry, including the development of
industry policy to reduce the industry’s global
environmental and health impacts and ensure
sustainable economic growth for the industry.
In 2005, the United Nations Economic and
Social Council granted IPPIC non-governmental
organization (NGO) status enabling the council
to advocate on sustainable international industry
issues before the UN.
In 2019, IPPIC changed its name to the World
Coatings Council, but the council’s mission to tout
the global industry’s role and efforts critical to
sustainability remains unchanged. Sustainability
requires international participation, and the World
Coatings Council engaged a consultant to write
a sustainability report for the global paints and
coatings industry. The forthcoming report is based
on a materiality analysis conducted within the
industry, as well as by external stakeholders, and
identifies the challenges and achievements using
UN SDGs as a framework. World Coatings Council
members, many of which are international paint
and coatings trade associations, provided the
information to be showcased in the report.
