ACA Sustainability Report 2022 - Report - Page 7
ACA is proud of the industry’s ongoing efforts to advance
technologies in coatings science, while minimizing impact
on human health and the environment. With our third
Sustainability Report, we highlight the paint and coatings
industry’s contribution to a more sustainable future and the
essential nature of coatings.

As discourse around sustainability and climate change
expands, the industry continues to take numerous steps
to reduce waste, water use, and air emissions, and to
promote product and environmental stewardship. From
sourcing renewable raw materials, to improving products
and processes through advanced manufacturing, just-intime distribution and the use of supply-chain management
systems, the industry’s commitment to efficiency and
sustainability is evident and growing.
Innovation in industry research and development (R&D)
and the continued trend toward water-based coatings,
powder coatings, high-solid ultraviolet (UV) cure coatings
and lower-emitting coating products, among many others,
have contributed to significant reductions in hazardous air
pollutants (HAPs) and volatile organic compound (VOC)
emissions from production.
ACA has formed its own internal SustainabliTeam
to investigate ways to minimize the association’s
environmental impact; but above all, ACA is dedicated to
promoting the coatings industry’s history of sustainable
practices and providing products that protect, sustain,
and add value to the built environment, infrastructure,
and minimize its global greenhouse gas emissions. From
antifouling marine coatings that reduce “drag,” greatly
minimizing the ship’s energy and fuel consumption,
to coatings developed for hybrid and electric vehicle
applications that provide key performance attributes like
“lightweighting” and electrical insulation that helps control
temperature for superconducting batteries and extend
battery life — coatings are critical players in combatting
climate change.

Coatings are essential to preserving materials and
making products more sustainable through enhanced
durability and increased performance properties. This
report shares examples of the critical role coatings
play in contributing to the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals, showcases the industry’s
environmental progress, and spotlights our own
PaintCare paint product stewardship program. I hope
you will find the report useful and informative. Additional
information on sustainability in our industry is available
on the ACA website at www.paint.org/sustainability.
