Janet Johnson
a long-time resident of Newbury Court
passed away in September 2021.
Janet proudly grew up in a Swedish-American
family in the Bronx and Haddam Neck, CT.
She married the Rev. Lowell Johnson, a United
Methodist minister, and together they raised
children Cindy, Randy, Kent, and Lynn. Lowell’s
ministry would lead the family to different
communities across Connecticut and New York.
If there was one word to
describe Janet, it would
be welcome. Janet was
always welcoming
someone to something—
from the churches the
family called home to
international students
staying with them to new
members of the Newbury
Court community. Since
moving to Newbury Court
in 2001, Janet was often
the first person to welcome new members of
our campus, residents and staff alike.
“
Janet was a strong advocate for Charitable
Gift Annuities. She shared why before her
passing in 2021. “Being a minister’s wife, I
learned how to measure out my money. Years
ago I attended a presentation about Charitable
Gift Annuities. When I sold our house in the
Poconos for $50,000, I established a CGA for
$30,000, and I’ve been
creating them ever since.
When I came into some
money from my brother,
I used that to create
more. You get income
for life and a tremendous
tax advantage the year
you buy it. I know that
whatever is left will go
to Deaconess. I’ve lived
here longer than any
other place in my life. It’s
a real community and a
fantastic staff. They really care about us. It’s a
win-win for me.”
Janet’s quarter-million-dollar gift to the New England Deaconess
was transformational as it went to support
all members of our community.
This donation, and caring for others,
was something that Janet did every day.
