2021 22 DALC AnnualReport for FLIPBOOK - Flipbook - Page 3
Message from Board Chair and CEO
before us. With these milestones in mind, we have
created the 1889 Society. The 1889 Society is intended
to promote one form of visionary philanthropy: planned
giving. Our community members have been stepping
forward with generosity and continuing to build on our
long-standing mission.
In 2021, we saw the labor market evolve at a
remarkable pace. We saw front-line workers’ hourly
rate increase in some cases by 30% since 2018.
Combined with The Great Resignation, it was a time
when the most dedicated in our field continued to
thrive. We were grateful for our top-notch Human
Resources department, which worked tirelessly to be
sure all parts of the organization remained staffed and
strong. Our long-standing financial strength allowed us
to stay competitive with wages.
Dear Friends:
What a year we have had at New England Deaconess.
Our strength as an historic not for profit CCRC was
never more evident than in 2021 as we successfully
navigated our way through the pandemic. We
celebrated the seasons, connected with our community
and celebrated all the staff members who make NEDA
a dynamic and joyful organization.
Our Rockridge campus celebrated 50 years of serving
older adults in Western Massachusetts. Rockridge is
one of the few communities that were able to keep
covid out until 100% of the residents were vaccinated.
We look forward to recognizing these milestones in the
Elmo Young Gardens later in the spring.
Our success through these covid years is due to the
commitment of our staff, the community spirit of our
residents and generations of philanthropy that came

Deaconess also accomplished a new long term vision for
the Leland Home. Leland is now a member of the 2Life
Communities network and is being re-built to offer
affordable housing for older adults. We are proud that
the Leland mission will continue in that site for years to
come.
Thank you to everyone in our community for their
support, care, and compassion over the past year.
Working together, we will continue to fulfill our mission
for future generations.
Sincerely,
