Our Current Challenges
In the last three years, we have experienced a
20% annual increase
in animal intake, all while caring for the most challenging medical and
behavioral cases. Our inspired, successful programs and services are being
delivered out of dilapidated facilities in desperate need of demolition or
major overhaul and these challenges, plus others outlined below, severely
limit our potential.
A central shelter on the verge of collapse with dilapidated kennels,
prone to flooding.
An array of incredibly small and cramped rooms houses a hard-working,
7-day clinic, which is inadequate to meet the sheer number of ailing animals
in need. The space is also difficult to keep properly sterile or functionally
equipped and arranged for both animals and staff.
Inadequate space to rehabilitate emotionally traumatized pets and
prepare them for a new home. In addition, we cannot currently serve all
the dogs struggling with trauma.
Dependence on a kennel system exacerbates trauma for the pets we
wish to help, making their transition to a new home even harder.
Not nearly enough space to manage the transfer of animals to states
where people want to adopt, yet have a shortage of pets.
A challenging and unsafe working environment exacerbates the daily
challenges for our staff and volunteers.
Our Current Programs
Barn Cat Program
A non-traditional adoption service for cats
unable to enter a traditional home in
Central Texas.
Behavior Trauma and Rehabilitation Program
Intense training and rehabilitation for dogs who
have experienced significant trauma and need
help to cope with life outside of APA!.
Feline Leukemia Adoption Center
A safe harbor for cats who have been
diagnosed with the feline leukemia virus (FelV+)
to debunk myths and find each FelV+ cat a
home to call their very own.
Maddie’s® Cat Adoption Center: Treatment
and Care for Ringworm Positive Cats
A dedicated treatment center for cats
traditionally at risk of euthanasia elsewhere.
Education about this common and easily cured
condition is also a part of this program.
Medical Triage and Wellness Clinic
Our hospital serves as an emergency room,
wellness hospital, and spay/neuter clinic all
in one. Operating as a vet clinic, it saves
many animals who in other shelters would be
considered untreatable.
Neonatal Kitten Nursery
A unique and creative approach to saving an
entire class of especially fragile, homeless
animals—orphaned, unweaned kittens.
Parvo Puppy ICU
The first of its kind in the nation, the Parvo
Puppy ICU provides care and rehabilitation to
puppies who contract parvovirus and would be
killed in other shelters.
