Dear Friends,
Publisher’s Corner
As many of you know I had a bad fall in April and at my age (72) any fall could end up
being bad. I had bruises all over and my forehead was cut so deep they had to do stitches
both inside and out, a total of about 17 or 18 stitches. I broke my nose in three places and
skinned it. I had two black eyes and looked like I had been in a fight and lost.
It took several weeks to get back to what would be my normal look. I still have some
soreness and the bones in my nose are still healing but I will survive this, God willing.
Now on to happier things. In June we will celebrate Father9s Day, this is a time to
celebrate our fathers. If your father is still living, please spend some time with him, that
would be the greatest gift ever.
The first Father9s Day was celebrated in the United States on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. It was
initiated by Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran and a single parent
who raised his six children after their mother passed away. Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to establish an official
day to honor fathers, similar to Mother9s Day.
In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge encouraged state governments to observe Father9s Day. However, it was
not until 1972 before the day honoring fathers became a nationwide holiday in the United States. Father9s Day
2024 will occur on Sunday, June 16. In other countries3especially in Europe and Latin America3fathers are
honored on St. Joseph9s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday that falls on March 19.
Please take this opportunity to honor and appreciate all the wonderful fathers out there!
Sincerely,
Linda Kay
