How it Got its Name Suck-egg Hollow, Tennessee
Suck-egg Hollow is a valley in Roane County, Tennessee. The legend tells us Suck-egg Hollow got its name
when a local farmer found a snake eating his chicken9s eggs. The name is not the best-selling point for the
community but without question it is a name you will not soon forget.
Tennessee in War Time
Blount County was pro-Union throughout the Civil War. In August 1864 the Union troops took refuge in the
Blount County Courthouse. General Joseph Wheeler led a Confederate cavalry attack against the Union
troops inside the courthouse. Wheeler9s troops set fire to several buildings, including a store where the
county records were being kept. An African-American slave, Polly Tool, saved most of the records. She was
honored by a statue in the Blount County courthouse.
