Many attempts have been made to prove the skunk ape is alive and well in East Tennessee. These attempts
include reported sightings, recordings and photos. Large unexplained footprints have been seen and
contributed to the skunk ape. Most scientists discount the existence of the skunk ape. They have said it was the
result of folklore and a hoax.
The skunk ape is said to be a human or ape-like creature, approximately 537 feet tall, and has matted
reddishbrown or black hair and gets its name due to the foul odor it gives off. The odor is reported as being
like that of a skunk.
People that believe in the sightings of the skunk ape may have actually seen an American Black bear. The
United States National Park Service considers the skunk ape to be a hoax.
In 2003 sightings of the skunk ape were reported in LaFollette Tennessee, about 40 miles from Knoxville
Tennessee. The University of Tennessee had a team investigate the sightings of the skunk ape. They found a
trail of dead domesticated animals but no sign of the skunk ape.
