THE COVE
Driving to the Cove on this pretty day
over the mountains we go, smiling all the way
As we drive around the loop there
Thoughts of possibly seeing a big bear
Are dancing around in my head
But Might just see some deer instead
Maybe take a turn down to check out the old mill
Or take a walk to the Pearl Harbor tree just up a short hill
Or around old ccc camp in the fields
That Will be full of yellow daffodils
Always a chance to walk to Abrams falls
Or to marvel at some old cabin walls
Turn down forge road and the whitehead homeplace we9ll see
Or exit the cove on parsons branch road maybe
But we turn back towards the loop road
As there9s plenty more to see I am told
We stop at a cabin sitting near a spring
Most are, as being near water source was a needed thing
Often on that spring would be a small structure of sort
And that building was also of much import
They would place their milk or butter there to keep it cool
And some fresh vegetables or fruits too
Nearby there is a shed of sort often with a pit in the dirt floor
Where they would hang meat to cure, salted and smoked for sure
Across the way there is a barn of rather odd design
A shape of which is the cantilever kind
It9s pair of base stables with a large overhang
Where the animals would get shelter from rain and snow
The stables separated by an opening
Where wagons or buggies they could stow
Off to the side a structure with slotted walls and wooden floor
Called a corn crib. , where corn still on cob they would store
That corn might be used for livestock feed
But more often would fill the family need
