devotional is generally understood to be a collection of devotions—short meditations on various
subjects. There are many such books, most of which have daily or weekly devotions. A person
uses a devotional by setting aside a certain time each day or each week to privately reflect, pray,
and make decisions with the words of the relevant devotion in mind.
This devotional is somewhat different.
First, the number of devotions is limited to five—one brief meditation for each subject. These are urgent
topics that require discussion, perseverance, and action. They are central themes for today’s life and faith.
Second, while we expect this devotional to be used by people in their private devotions, we do not intend
for it to stay there. When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, Jesus did not say that they
should pray, “My Father, who art in heaven,” but rather, “Our Father, who art in heaven.”
This means that prayer is not just a private matter. We are not just praying for ourselves; we are also
praying as part of a church that raises the same prayer around the world.
All the meditations in this brief collection invite us to reflect and pray about critical issues and to
communicate our reflections with other people and take collective actions. So, let’s read carefully the
pages that follow.
And above all, let’s put our faith into action and recruit other people to end hunger and injustice.
