THE COMING STORM
A myriad of factors, including population
boom, increased immigration, monumental
shifts in industry, globalization and culture
are reshaping the concept of urban life and creating significant challenges for city
planners and society at large.
In the past - really, throughout the history of human civilization - we have responded to
increases in population and over-crowding of urban spaces by simply building more and
spreading outward. Today, however, we understand the negative impact that endless
sprawl can have on our environment, and on our finite natural resources. Additionally,
more and more people are moving toward, not away from, densely populated areas for
both economic and cultural reasons.
