Learning the etiquette
island customs.
Respect and kindness are pillars of the culture here and that makes it a wonderful place
to live and visit. We appreciate when guests educate themselves on the unspoken rules of
etiquette that Jamaicans live by as a gesture of thanks to the community for sharing this
precious land.

In Jamaica good manners are a way of life. Politely greet those you come in contact with,
treat island elders with extra respect, use their proper titles without using nicknames,
and acknowledge fellow passengers you may be sharing a taxi with.
Tipping is not a part of local Jamaican culture and certain venues do not allow tipping.
In some other destinations, staff can be at risk of losing their jobs if they are caught
accepting a tip. Be sure that if you wish to tip, you ask for consent prior to doing so.
Sportswear or beachwear should be confined to the beach or to excursions. If you plan
to visit a business or government building, it is best to check ahead to see if there is a
dress code in place.
If you see one or two red flags on the beach, this means that it is too dangerous to swim
in this location. Do not enter the water for your safety.
Racism is not tolerated on the island. Jamaica is a beautiful melting pot of different
cultures. Respect must be shown to all.
