DENALI HIGHWAY
The Denali Highway runs east to west and connects
the small communities of Paxson and Cantwell.
Opened in 1957, this was the first road access to Denali
National Park. While there is pavement at each end
of the highway most of the 135 miles is gravel, and
a speed of 30mph is recommended. As such, many
rental car companies prohibit use of their cars on this
road. If your rental company does permit, this is one of
the most scenic drives in Alaska. Travelers choose this
route for the spectacular views, wildlife opportunities
and a remote experience.
This highway is not plowed during the winter months,
and traffic shifts from cars and RV’s to snow machines,
dog sleds and skiers. There are lodges located along
the Denali Highway that present opportunities for
overnight stays, dining, gas, tire repair and tours.
