I love reclaimed wood
for many reasons, but
one is this idea of ‘Made
in America, twice’. It
was originally built into
something, and then it
outgrows its use and
you take and make
something new out of it.
In that way it’s born in
this country twice over.
”
Matt Garvin started with Elmwood
back in 2001. “In the beginning we
were just a young group of spirited
people who felt good about what we
were doing.” The company began with
a mindset of reuse and sustainability,
and Matt carries that on with his deep
belief in environmental consciousness.
It’s something he helps pass on to every
new team member. “We’ve helped
people who have joined us adopt that
spirit, to truly enjoy what we’re doing
and why we’re doing it.” Matt likes
to say that, because of their recycled
nature, reclaimed wood products are
made in America, twice. “Reclaimed
wood was originally built into
something, but then it outgrows its
use and you take and make something
new out of it. In that way it’s born in
this country twice over.” He also feels
that each piece of wood is, in many
ways, like a person. “Every board has
its good and bad points. They come to
you rather unpolished, but each board
also has its own beauty. It’s our job to
find that beauty, pull it out, and shape
it into something else.” Matt continues
to help lead our team forward with
ideas of sustainability and quality, and
is excited for a future “on the right
track, with the right product, and
the right people.”
