coordination
across
departments.
Christ Hospital’s Green Team includes
employees
from
Facilities,
Environmental Services, Food and
Nutrition Services, Nursing, and from
many additional departments from
throughout
the
hospital;
this
diversity
allows
them
to
communicate
openly
about
challenges and quickly implement
solutions.
Take for example, the coordinated
effort
of
the
recycling
pilots
mentioned
earlier.
District
staff
worked with Green Team members,
Facilities staff and Environmental
Services staff to choose optimal pilot
locations, identify where containers
could be put in units that would
provide enough recycling without
being
overwhelming
for
the
Environmental
Services
staff
to
manage, and create a communication
plan to ensure all hospital staff
understood
the
new
recycling
program. Even after the recycling
rollout, the Green Team continues to
monitor
the
recycling
program,
utilizing sensors in the recycling
dumpsters to ensure recycling bags
are
making
it
to
the
correct
dumpsters and identify sources of
contamination.
As for the Green Team’s next steps,
Jake Campbell stated, “We would like
to master our recycling program.
However, beyond that, we would like
to re-evaluate how we can reduce or
eliminate Styrofoam usage at our
organization. One long-term goal is to
make
sustainability
and
waste
reduction a line item in our budgets.”
Even
though
the
Green
Team
recognizes
there
is
room
for
continued improvement with their
recycling
program,
the
crossdepartmental coordination and initial
success
during
an
already
overwhelming year for hospital staff
proves they are more than worthy of
receiving the 2020 Outstanding Green
Team Award. And for anyone looking
to
replicate
their
success,
Jake
Campbell suggests “make yourselves
known to the organization so people
who are interested can find you and
participate. Also, it’s important to
align all the proper departments. We
are thankful that our Environmental
Services
Department,
Food
and
Nutrition
services,
Facilities
Department, and Nursing Teams are
all involved in making an effort to
advance
our
waste
reduction
capabilities.”
