About the art work
2020 was a year where we appeared to stand still but EVERYTHING changed. This is reflected in
the river Eden and the Eden valley, where the stones and river beds are continually being bashed
and altered, but still maintain their beauty. In fact, they are all the more beautiful because of this
life that runs through them.
Kirkby Stephen is a beautiful and unique market town, nestled within an area of outstanding
natural beauty and so it is only fitting that any artwork that specifically aims to say something
about it, should lie within the very fabric of the landscape, emphasising the aesthetic of the area
and reflecting/ shining a light on its beauty as well as the memories of those who live, work or play
here.
Helen’s gilded stones punctuate the landscape of Kirkby Stephen, drawing our attention to key
areas along key walks and to watch as nature reclaims/creates its own space. We are able to see
how stones move and transform within the environment, bending to nature’s will.
This booklet guides you to where the stones were first placed and provides memories and poems
to accompany them. Some may still be there, whilst others may have moved with time.
