no one asks
to step up.
Too few girls are raised to think of themselves as
political leaders, too few women are encouraged
to run for office by their family and friends, and
many women who are interested in running
underestimate their ability to do so successfully.
All of this adds up to a huge gender gap in
America’s political landscape: women make
up half of our country, but only 25 percent
of our 520,000 elected offices.
Young women receive
less support for political
leadership from both
parents and teachers.
Women are rarely asked or
encouraged to run for office
by anyone in their lives.
Women are half as likely as
men to feel they will ever be
qualified to run for office.
