What does the Torah say about leadership?
A leader must lead from the front: he or she must “go out
before them.” But a leader must not be so far out in front that, when he
turns around, he finds no one following. He must “lead them out,”
meaning, he must carry people with him.
Thank you, Mark Sokoll, for decades of inspiring leadership. As
President/CEO you understood how to “lead us out”, meaning, with
strong body and spirited soul you carried your capacious community.
As often as you like to quote, “what a long, strange trip it’s been”, the
past two years of your leadership journey about sum it up!
Guided by one of your heroes and mentors, the Grateful Dead, you
understood that “You can’t go back, and you can’t stand still, if the
thunder don’t get you then the lightning will.”
The JCCGB prevailed to carry forward your charismatic legacy.
As one of numerous JCC Board Chairs, it is truly an honor to “lead out”
together. With gratitude for your guidance, rabbinical inspiration, delightful
sense of humor, optimism, enthusiastic collaboration with numerous
constituencies, passion for JCC mission and vison, and magnetism in
the broader Jewish Community.
