Freedom Fund Scholarship
Recipient Bios:
Miles Charles is a Senior at East Chapel Hill High School. At East, Miles initiated a
Leadership Council for Students of Color with the support of Principal, Kenneth Proulx
and District Equity Coordinator, Tiffany Boston. He started this advisory council to
bring the voices of students of color to the table to inform policies and programs that
affect them in the school. He was also an active member of the youth NAACP and led
the local chapter of the national campaign on Counselors not Cops. This campaign
challenges the practice of having school resource officers placed in schools and
advocates for alternative restorative justice approaches. He was nominated to serve
on a CHCCS district-wide committee to examine the practice of having school resource
officers in the CHCCS school system.

Miles has also been swimming competitively for 11 years and is a member of the
North Carolina Aquatic Club. He will attend Davidson College in the Fall and he will
continue swimming as a member of the Davidson men’s swim team. At Davidson he
plans to major in Public Policy. He is interested in examining how economic, social
and educational policies have functioned to keep communities of color separate
and unequal. He wants a career where he can work either through direct service or
through policy to serve underrepresented and marginalized communities.
My name is Ethan Taylor. I am graduating from East Chapel Hill High School, and I
will be attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where I will declare a
major in Architecture. I am so grateful for this scholarship; without it, I would have
to spend many hours working to pay my cost of attendance. With this financial aid,
however, I will be given more time to focus on my rigorous architectural coursework. I
will also have the time to start an internship early in my college career, to get handson experience in the workforce and be better prepared for employment after college.

In addition, I will have more time to contribute towards multicultural, anti-racist,
and benevolent organizations at my university. I aim to participate in and start the
difficult discussions that come with addressing racial and socioeconomic inequity. I
aim to organize clothing, book, food, and hygiene drives on my campus to give back
to the needy and homeless communities nearby, to alleviate the conditions of the
impoverished. And, I aim to spread awareness to multicultural events, such as open
mics or guest speaker presentations, so that more people would see the good in those
who are regularly marginalized and stereotyped by the media.
Overall, my goal is to make all minorities and economically disadvantaged people feel
valued in this world of bigotry and hate. Your scholarship will help me realize this
goal, as well as my success as an architecture student. Thank you again for this award.
