Hi, my name is Heri Ongechi, and I am a senior at Carrboro High School. In the fall,
I will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with tentative
plans to study economics and business. I love how these fields combine ideas and
concepts from a wide variety of academic concentrations, and I believe studying
these two subjects will broaden my worldview and prepare me to have a true impact
on my community. Post-collegiately, I am interested in becoming an entrepreneur
and business owner, and would love to start a foundation dedicated to helping
underprivileged youth. I am very passionate about issues such as injustice and
inequality, and would like to engage with these issues in college and throughout my
career.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the NAACP scholarship for the support
they have offered me as I embark on my college career. College is expensive, and
cost and finances were major considerations for me as I made my college decision.
Additionally, as an individual with ambitious career and philanthropic aspirations,
graduating debt free is essential for me to be able to truly pursue those goals. This
scholarship will play a huge role in allowing me to focus fully on receiving a quality
education that will provide me with the tools and resources to make a positive impact
on my community.
Hello! My name is Kaelyn Elien. I am a graduating Senior from Chapel Hill High
School. I plan to attend Elon University in the fall where I will study Broadcast
Journalism with a minor in Dance. As an NAACP Scholarship recipient, the scholarship
will assist with my academic endeavors as I plan to learn how to take journalistic
principles and highlight black and other minority voices. We often see BIPOC stories,
culture, and more being suppressed in the media — I hope to change that.
