A
. Their catchy songs and lively performances get the whole
audience dancing, singing and learning! Available for family concerts
and student matinees, these high-energy, joyful shows celebrate the
Latinx experience and incorporate Spanish, English and ASL languages.
Family concerts include a medley of songs drawn from 123 Andrés’
award-winning albums such as Actívate (Grammy® nominee for Best
Children’s Album in 2021), Canta las Letras (Latin Grammy® nominee
for Best Children’s Album), Arriba Abajo (Latin Grammy® Winner for
Best Children’s Album in 2016) and ¡Uno, Dos, Tres con Andrés! (Latin
Grammy® nominee for Best Children’s Album in 2015). Their educational
shows can be adapted for Pre-K audiences up to 6th grade and
introduce a variety of musical instruments and styles from Central and
South America, along with geography, social studies and the Spanish
language. The company has also created multiple bilingual books,
published by Scholastic, based on their songs including Hello, Friend
(Hola, Amigo) and Ten Little Birds (Diez Pajaritos). These books are
perfect to connect the performances to reading and writing for the
younger elementary ages.
Dan + Claudia Zanes: In Concert
October 12 • Thursday at 10:30am
DREYFOOS HALL
Performance Length: One hour
Recommended Grade Levels: K-5
Suggested Curricula: Music, Social Studies
Grammy® Award winner Dan Zanes and Haitian-American jazz
vocalist Claudia Zanes perform a mix of old and new songs from near
and far in a style that’s been called “All-Ages Social Music.” In other
words, when they perform it’s a party! The selections are drawn
from Dan’s celebrated catalogue; their Kennedy Center
commissioned folk opera called Night Train 57; the House Party
songbook published in 2018, and their Smithsonian / Folkways 2021
album release Dan + Claudia Zanes – Let Love Be Your Guide. During
these highly interactive shows, the audience is invited to dance and
sing along in what might be called a casual – and subversively
educational – festive atmosphere. The music is homespun, joyful,
sophisticated and artful. These performances appeal to audiences
of all ages and the duo is also well loved in school settings. Claudia is a
board-certified Music Therapist. Her background in this field has
given the pair additional ways to find meaningful community
connections and reach a more diverse audience. For the past four
years, Claudia and Dan have been advocating for increased
accessibility in performing arts spaces through sensoryfriendly presentations. Also known as “relaxed” or “come as you
are,” these performances create conditions that are comfortable
for audience members with a wide range of needs.
