PREDATOR - DECEPTION
BILL JORDAN
JIM CRUMLEY
In the early 1970s, Jim Crumley, a passionate hunter,
came to the conclusion that the third version of
Tigerstripe camouflage, which was evolving slowly, was
ineffective in the woods where he hunted. As a result, he
embarked on a mission to design his own hunting suit,
which led to the creation of TreBark. This new camouflage
pattern was a combination of gray, brown, and black
colors with distinct tree-bark markings.
1970
In 1986, Bill Jordan sketched and colored the bark of
an aged oak tree, with the conviction that overlaying
images of twigs and leaves onto the bark could produce a
three-dimensional effect that would blend seamlessly into
various landscapes. This marked the inception of what we
know as Realtree® today.
1986
Predator is recognized as the pioneer of Open Pattern
Technology for camouflage, which was first introduced
in 2001. “Brown Deception” was developed in line with
Predator’s philosophy that although the pattern may not
have a photorealistic appearance, what counts is how the
prey perceives it.

ARMY CAMOUFLAGE
IMPROVEMENT EFFORT
In 2010, the A.C.I.E was launched with the purpose
of identifying a new camouflage alternative. Its
primary objective was to establish a long-term,
multi-environment camouflage strategy for the
entire military force. To achieve this, the Army
conducted a comprehensive evaluation of a family of
camouflage patterns. This endeavor represented the
most rigorous and scientifically grounded study of
camouflage that the Army had undertaken to date.
