The Macon Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated
Serving with Passion and Purpose
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is the second oldest predominantly Black, Greek lettered sorority.
Because of the desire to focus on public service, twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University founded
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, January 13, 1913. Two months later, the Founders participated in
the Women's Suffrage March in Washington, D.C. In 1930, Delta was officially incorporated.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is an organization of college educated women committed to the
constructive development of its members and to public service. The primary focus is on developing and
improving the Black community. The sorority’s purpose is to aid and support through established programs in
communities throughout the world. Currently, there are 200,000 members in over 1,000 collegiate and
alumnae chapters in the United States, Canada, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands,
Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the Republic of Korea.
In 1943, the Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was chartered as a postgraduate chapter in Fort Valley, Georgia. In 1958, twelve women in the Macon area chartered the Epsilon
Sigma post-graduate chapter in Macon, Georgia. Those twelve women were:

The following year, the chapter became the Macon Alumnae Chapter (MAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Incorporated. The service area encompasses the following Georgia counties: Bibb, Crawford, Jones, Monroe,
Twiggs, and Wilkinson. The five living charter members, Barbara Clowers, Delores Cook, Wendell Howard,
Bettye Hutchings, and Carol Perdue attend chapter events as their health allows.
Today, the Macon Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has over 160 financially active
members. The chapter provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through the national Five-Point
Programmatic Thrust:
1. Educational Development
2. Economic Development
3. Physical and Mental Health
4. Political Awareness and Involvement
5. International Awareness and Involvement
The Macon Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has received numerous awards both
within the Sorority and in the middle Georgia community. Sorority awards include the Southern Region Red
Ribbon Chapter and the Newsletter of the Year Awards. Locally, MAC has been recognized by St. Paul AME
