LEARN SOUTH CAROLINA’S
STATE DANCE: THE SHAG
S
ome vacations make you smile.
Others make you want to get
up and dance. South Carolina
checks both boxes.
To swing dance to beach music, glide
on the balls of your feet so as not to
kick up the sand. That’s what shagging
was in the 1930s and 40s along the
Grand Strand, a cultural phenomenon born on the beach that has been
passed down through generations.
Shag dancing is liable to pop up
anywhere there’s a jukebox in South
Carolina. But the epicenter is and will
always be Ocean Drive in North Myrtle
Beach, the shag capital of the world.
Visit in March to see the National Shag
Dance Championships or in April/May
for the Spring Safari, when the best shaggers in the world strut their stuff. Better
yet, go to any beach pavilion or bar and
get on the dance floor to step and twirl
the night away.
