The first shots of the Civil War were fired here by
cadets at The Citadel, who bombarded a supply ship
heading to resupply Union soldiers at Fort Sumter.
The first tea plantation in North America was established in
Summerville. The tea plants were transported to Wadmalaw
Island, where visitors today can take tours of the operation.
Peaceful protests, such as lunch counter sit-ins recognized
by a marker at the Kress building, commemorate the
beginning of the Civil Rights movement in Charleston.

Founded in 1842 as the South Carolina Military Academy,
The Citadel is now one of only six senior military colleges
in the country.
The Confederate submarine, H.L. Hunley, was the first submarine to
successfully sink an enemy vessel. The Hunley was discovered in waters
off Charleston in 1995 and raised from the ocean’s floor in 2000.
Residents concerned with preserving the city’s historic buildings founded
the first community-based historic preservation organization in the country.
