RIDE
Thrill seekers flock to Carowinds and it’s easy to see why:
the amusement park is home
to 14 roller coasters, including Fury 325, which, at 325
feet, is the tallest giga-coaster
in the world. There are
calmer pursuits, too, like an
on-site water park and lots of
kid-friendly rides.
PADDLE
Each spring, thousands of spider lilies burst into bloom along
Landsford Canal—a stretch of
the Catawba River—transforming boulders and rocky shoals
into islands of white blossoms
that are best viewed from a
canoe or kayak. Even better, the
six-week spectacle corresponds
with the offspring of the park’s
resident Bald Eagles learning
to fly.
ROLL
Carolina Adventure World’s
100-mile network of trails includes everything from dedicated mud bogs and rock crawls
to dirt bike trails, a drag strip,
motocross and even bridle
paths. Cyclists at the Giordana
Velodrome can reach speeds
of up to 50 m.p.h. “Try the
Track” sessions are supervised
by pros.
DRIVE
With a clubhouse, practice
green, driving range, pro shop
and snack grill, the Tom Jackson-designed championship
golf course at Cheraw State
Park feels like a country club.
But as a Certified Audubon
International Wildlife Sanctuary, wildlife abounds and the
only man-made distractions are
those 18 challenging holes.
LEARN
Displays depicting more than
6,000 years of Native American
life are on display at the Catawba
Cultural Center, a museum
with examples of traditional
dwellings, hand-carved canoes,
tools and costumes. Celebrated
and rare, authentic Catawba
pottery, which is formed by hand
and fired on an open pit, is sold
at the adjoining craft store.
NOVEMBER
Annual Revolutionary War
Field Days, Camden
historiccamden.org
Historic Camden hosts battle
reenactments and living history
demonstrations that capture
18th century life.
