IS IDFPR GOING TO WAIVE THE IN-PERSON CEU
REQUIREMENT FOR LICENSURE RENEWAL DUE TO COVID19 AND SOCIAL DISTANCING EFFORTS IN ILLINOIS?
At the time of printing, IDFPR has not yet provided a variance
for LSWs and LCSWs to utilize live virtual education for
in-person education. It is the position of the chapter that this
variance should be allowed due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
and we will continue to push the licensing board to enact this
variance. You can find the latest news on our » website. If
you aren’t already a member, help us strengthen our voice in
advocating for a waiver by » joining NASW today.
LICENSURE RENEWAL INFO
Requirements for social work licensure have changed for the current cycle ending
November 30, 2021. Please read through for more details about the updated
WHAT DO I NEED TO RENEW MY LICENSE?
Every licensed social worker in the state of Illinois is required to accumulate a total of 30 continuing
education units (CEUs) during the current licensure cycle. Of those 30 CEUs, three (3) hours must
be in ethics and another three (3) hours must be in cultural competency. Additionally, at least 1 hour
must include a sexual harassment prevention training, and there is now a reported mandated
reporter training required.
NOTE: No CEUs are required for the remainder of the first two-year licensure cycle in which you are
licensed. This means you are not required to acquire CEUs the first time you renew your license,
but you are still required to submit (and pay) the renewal application and fee.

HOW MANY OF MY CEU HOURS NEED TO BE IN-PERSON?
Licensed social workers (LSWs) and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) must obtain a minimum
of 50% of the total continuing education (CE) hours by a method that includes face-to-face, in-person
instruction or experience. This means that at least 15 of the 30 CEUs required for licensure renewal
must be earned via face-to-face, in-person trainings.
NOTE: According to IDFPR, live-virtual workshops (trainings wherein the speaker is not in the same
room as the attendee) do not qualify as face-to-face, in-person instruction.
