To stand still, stop (moving or doing), cease
To tarry, delay, remain, abide, endure
To make a stand, hold one’s ground
I have circled so many—what about you? To present oneself, to abide, and to make a stand are
those that stand out the most to me (only slight pun intended).
How do these definitions or phrases give you more insight into why the priests were to stand still
within the turbulent, violently rushing river?

How might this quote by Mother Teresa also give insight to the importance of stillness?
In the silence of the heart God speaks. If you face God in prayer and silence, God will
speak to you. Then you will know that you are nothing. It is only when you realize your
nothingness, your emptiness, that God can fill you with Himself. Souls of prayer are souls
of great silence.
MOT HE R T E RE SA
At first glance, we may think that being still is contradictory to an engrained American culture
of busy, busier, busiest. But just because one thing seems opposite doesn’t mean it is. It’s not
either/or. We can be dancing while still being still. Whether we’re physically still while calming
our hearts or not, we can allow the world to just fall away as we worship our Lord. Mother Teresa’s
quote above talks about the silence of the heart, and that’s exactly what’s needed. Though
admittedly it is easier for me to hear Him best in quiet surroundings, we need to simply enjoy being
in the presence of the King of the universe. It is with a still heart that we will hear His still, small
voice (1 Kings 19:12).
What are some practical ways you can introduce some stillness and quiet into your days? How
might these practices impact your personal/spiritual life as well as your leadership?
