WEEK ONE
DAY FIVE
Read
1 Samuel 18
When darkness surrounds, friends step in. I’ve said it forever and feel it even more emphatically
after going through some seriously hard things these past few years. We have Jesus, yes of
course…but sometimes the people around us act as His hands and feet.
The story in 1 Samuel 19 and Psalms 59 where we’ve spent this week surrounds three friends
of David: the king (Saul), the king’s son (Jonathan), and the king’s daughter (Michal). Some of
these proved to be loyal friends, another did not.
What goes into a friendship that stands the test of time?

friendship, David was unharmed. But you may be surprised, based on what we’ve read about Saul
so far, that I’m calling him David’s friend as well. Let’s look at that a little more closely before
continuing in our psalm.
In 1 Samuel 16:21 we read,
And David came to Saul and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he
became his armor-bearer.
